Nainital Sightseeing - Himalaya Darshan

February 2nd, 2009

As the name suggests, Himalaya Darshan or Snow View, is a scenic spot close to main Nainital where you could see the snow capped Himalayas from a distance. Located about 5 kms from Nainital Mall Road, Snow View is an excellent place to view the picture postcard view of the Himalayan Peaks.

On the way to Kilbury, Snow view is all about witnessing the mighty Himalayas from a point which is roughly 2200 meters from the sea level. As you view it from down to up, the first beautiful sight is of a forested valley and as you move up, one of the most uninterrupted and clear views of the Himalayas can be seen.

The place is quite popular among tourists and a local Chai wala will make it more a pleasing affair by offering a round of Hot Chai/Coffee. But that’s not all, a plate of Eggs with bun or local Maggi (Noodles) will taste like never before. You will also come across a local air gun shooting wala where you can shoot plastic bottles hooked on a tree.

Some of us who are more adventurous would like to explore the place in the dark. We will play Pink Floyd in our cars and take a drink or two while no one is around… Just the hills, music and the Himalayas :)

Nainital Hotels - Alka Lakeview

February 2nd, 2009

Some argue that Alka Lakeview is the best located hotel in entire Nainital. We too have absolutely no doubts about Alka’s location. Its on the famous Mall Road and facing the Naini Lake. The hotel offers excellent view of the lake and comes with all basic amenities.

Rooms:We strongly believe that “room options” that exist in Alka are more than any of its competitors in Nainital. Every guest in Alka would at least like the fact that there is a room for every budget in this hotel. Starting from Economy Room, the other choices you have are of a are Standard Room, Suite, Luxury Room, Royal Room and Family Apartment. We also liked the way Royal Rooms were designed - to give a feel of Mughal Architecture and Luxury. Another plus point about Alka is the reasonable price tag attached to it. The peak season rates start at Rs. 2,800/- per Night which we believe is a very reasonable price to pay for a hotel is located by the lake. However, Alka would always attract Nainital tourists who would like to stay in the mall area and close to the lake. The rooms according to us are fine for the price but they definitely lack taste. Alka would never be able to offer that upmarket taste and hence would never be able to figure in the list of Premium Hotels in Nainital. Guess Alka Hotel knows its clientele pretty well and they have positioned their hotel in such a way.

Room Rating for a Deluxe Hotel: 3/5

Facilities:The facilities at Alka Hotel are far more superior than any of its mall road competitors. We were quite impressed to see Billiards, Pool and Table Tennis as part of the recreational activities. The rooftop lawn, where you can order tea/coffee is such a relaxing experience that you would not want to get up and break your communication with the lake. The hotel has a multi-cuisine restaurant, “Woods” and a fast food outlet, “Alka Bistro”. We also liked the fact that the hotel is a paid Wi-fi zone.

Facilities Rating for a Deluxe Hotel: 3.75/5

Food and Service: We liked the food at Alka. However, we would you to order for Indian. Their Continental and Chinese food again lacked authenticity. The service standards were not poor but good for the price you pay. Dont expect exceptional service.

Food and Service for a Deluxe Hotel: 3/5

Location in Nainital: Located in the heart of Nainital’s Mall Road, Alka is definitely a value for money deal if you like to stay in a market place and close to the lake. However, after a point the noise of vehicles and the hustle and bustle of the mall, would definitely get onto you.

Satisfaction Percentage for Alka Lakeview Hotel Nainital: 65%

Nainital Manu Maharani Hotels

January 31st, 2009

Manu Maharani Hotel is named after princess Manu of the Kumaon Hills and now taken over by DS Group (Manufacturers of Rajnigandha, Catch, etc.) who converted this property into a Premium/Luxury Hotel in Nainital. Manu Maharani is located in Mallital which is the VIP area of Nainital at a distance of 1.5 kms. from Naini Lake.

Rooms: Manu Maharani boasts of Lake view from the rooms (partial from some) and after its taking over and renovation (due to which the hotel was closed for almost 01 year in 2007), the rooms have come out good but not what we expected them to be. Manu Maharani scores good points in terms of lake view from the rooms (which also makes it one of the only few hotels in Mallital to offer this luxury) but we were a bit disappointed with the standard (Premium) room size and the decor. The rooms are definitely clean and fresh but we encountered the same problem with Bathroom size. A hotel of this calibre should have taken out more space for bathrooms. On the other side, the Club Rooms were nice, airy and spacious. The only drawback was its close proximity to the Restaurant which could be little disturbing specially at times when there is a big group residing at the hotel.

Room Rating: 3.75/5

Facilities: Manu Maharani Hotel is equipped with all modern facilities and scores good points. We liked their Spa which had a variety of Spa and Ayurveda Treatments. However, we were  a little disappointed with our massage. So don’t expect world class spa treatments but definitely good enough for Nainital. Their Spa is in great demand due to the cross massaging they offer :)  The restaurant is fine and serves good veg and non veg food. Manu Maharani is one of the only few in Nainital to have a bar. The choice of drinks was fine but the rates were way too high (that’s probably because of high taxes in Nainital). The 24 hrs Coffee Shop is definitely a Value addition. The hotel also organizes Ghazal evenings, cultural evenings during the summer time.

Facilities Rating: 4/5

Food and Service: We were very much convinced with food and service. However, we thought the buffet spread could have been more fancier and bigger.

Food and Service Rating: 4/5

Location in Nainital:Manu Maharani is located close to the High Court. In fact it is right opposite the High Court. While coming from the lake/mall, take left for the Masjid and and then immediate right after the Masjid. Keep going up and take left from the T point and keep following the road till you see Manu Maharni on your left.

Satisfaction Percentage for Manu Maharani Hotel Nainital: 78.3%

Holiday IQ Rating for Manu Maharani: 5.08/7 (As on January 31, 2009)

Nainital - Story of a lake…

January 30th, 2009

Nainital, where the dancing waters of the Naini Lake engulf your imagination and overwhelm you with its absolute taste of tranquility is not just a hillstation but a romance for millions of people who come to this paradise every year. Located at a height of 6350 ft above the sea level, Nainital is a heavenly abode for all those who seek refuge in the Himalayas. Nainital is all about its simplicity and the rich character, no wonder the British founded Nainital and named it the “Summer Capital of India”. Since then Nainital has definitely grown more in terms of the concrete structures and population ( now all Indians :) ) but still retained its natural beauty and character.

There are different philosophies on how Nainital got its name. A very interesting tale from the Hindu Mythology suggests that Nainital is name after the eye of Parvati (Wife of Lord Shiva). It is believed that parts of the scorched body of Parvati fell on earth while being carried by Lord Shiva. The sixty four parts fell on different places and it was the eye (Nain in hindi) of Parvati that fell on Nainital and formed a lake here. Some even argue the shape of Naini Lake which appears like an eye if seen from the top…Remarkable!

The physical formation of Nainital is like a valley with a pear shaped lake in between and hills on both the sides. The famous Mall road runs on one side of the lake and ther side is occupied by Ayarpatta Slopes. China Peak is the highest hill which stands 8500 ft high and offers magnifiscent views of the Naini Lake. Some of the hills which cover Nainital are thickly forested and offer great trekking and nature walks. However, these hills are still known to have good wildlife also :) Infact Jim Corbett started off from these hills to hunt down the famous man eaters of Kumaon.

Nainital’s weather stays cool throughout the year and the region also receives snowfall in the months of January and February. During the summers, Nainital is full of toursists and that’s the time region’s economy touches new heights every year. From Hotel Walas to Bun Tiki Walas (Indian Burgers) to local boat vendors, every face has a smile that tells you the importance of tourists at that time of the year.  The Mall Road turns into a grand carnival and people can be seen shopping, eating and enjoying the “mela”.

In recent years, concerned citizens of Nainital have alarmed the local authorities of evironmental degradation of this beautiful hillstation. New Constructions have now been stopped in Nainital to quite an extent so that Naini Lake is saved. These are some of the steps that the local bodies have agreed to but the delicate ecosystems in Nainital still have to cope up with pressures like increasing number of tourist vehicles.

Nainital has lived for years and we hope that this beautiful lakseside town can be explored by many generations to come. We would request everyone to contribute their bit in preserving our very own Naini Lake…Thanks!
